1985 Indy 500 Program Excerpts

25 DAYS till the 100th INDY 500!!!

With the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 just a few weeks away, we've been having fun going through some old programs and thought we'd share some of our favorite pages from a few of them each day.

1985
The 69th running of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing was
won by Danny Sullivan and forever known for his spin and win.   Sullivan spun while leading, which was amazing, but Mario Andretti did an equally fantastic job of not hitting Sullivan and taking them both out.  Unfortunately, Sullivan was able to get back around Mario and our mom and pappy were disappointed their favorite driver missed out on another win.

We always love A.J.

Some of the rookies in 1985,
including one future 500 winner, and two drivers who never made the race.

and Disney....
10 years before the Disney World Speedway was built.

Why we love Indycar. Fun Zones!

One of the reasons we love going to Indycar races so much is all the other stuff to do when the cars aren't racing.

Here's just some of the extra fun at Indianapolis, Pocono and Baltimore this year.

Go-Karts (for little kids and big)

Racing Games,

Slot Cars,

 Carnival Rides

Climbing Thingies and
Super Bounce Houses,

 a Few New Friends,
Slides,
Zip Lines,
Games,
Goofiness,
Racing Games!!!!

 and Entertainment.

So if you're going to a race,
take the kids (not us, yours),
and spend the weekend at the track having a blast!

Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens

If you have some extra time in Indy, the zoo is a ton of fun and White River Gardens right next door is the prettiest gardens we're ever seen!  Plus, they're right in downtown Indianapolis.
We spend an extra day after the race every year so we can visit the animals and go on the mini roller coaster and Alex likes the carousel.

The Indianapolis Zoo is one of the nonracing parts of our trip that we really look forward to.  It's so beautiful and there's so many things to see and do, here are some of the things to enjoy there.

Our favorites are the dolphin show and the birds!

The bird exhibits

* Feed different types of kid-friendly small birds.

* Watch rare, gorgeous birds doing their thing.

* Let your child play in the Little tots treehouse play area.

The forest exhibits

* Walk under the dense trees spotting different types of birds.

* Marvel at the Red pandas, Amur tigers, brown bears, and other animals frolick, eat, or rest.

The ocean exhibits

* Touch real sharks in the shark pool.

* See penguins, moon jellies, and more.

* Look at an underwater veiwing for polar bears, sea lions, and many more ocean creatures.

* Watch dolphins do tricks.

The desert exhibits

* See rare animals that live in the desert.

* Watch the meerkats jump and play below the giant dome.

The plains exhibits

* Try your luck at beating a cheetahs speed.

* See cheetahs, elephants, white rhinos, warthogs, and many, many more animals.

White River Gardens

* Marvel at the beauty of exotic plants and trees.

* Learn about, feed, and watch 40 different species of butterflies in the butterfly house.

* See fish swimming by in the beautiful ponds.

* And have fun and take lots of pictures!

And more!!

Indy Garage Passes

Josef Newgarden sells Indy Bronze Badges

If you're going to be Indy on more than just race day you can buy a pass to enter the garage area on any day but race day.

That would be so cool!

They even have Junior Bagdes for kids ages 9-17, which we are, but our little sister is not therefore, we will not be getting bronze badges.

But since our little sister Alex adores Josef Newgarden she insisted we post this funny video of Josef  in the IMS offices at his 'side job selling bronze badges'.

Fun things in Indianapolis

If you think that a trip to the Indianapolis 500 may seem like its all about the race, think again.

We make the trip into a family vacation.

The ducks sharing the canal with us.

Here are some fun things that you can do while you're in Indianapolis:

* The Indianapolis Zoo is less than 10 minutes away and we always make sure to go there

* The canal is a very fun place to go, and we always spend a few evenings walking there and riding the paddle boats

* You can walk anywhere in downtown and it is always really nice

* You can go to an Indianapolis Indians baseball game.  The stadium is nearby the canal.

* The Indianapolis Museum of Art is right next to the canal

* If you like shopping there is The Circle Centre Mall which connects to several hotels and is three floors including a glow in the dark mini golf course!

Even though Makenna isn't that into racing, she still looks forward to our trip becuase there's so much other fun stuff to do in Indianapolis.
